What is Telemedical Abortion in the UK?

Accessing safe abortion can be a real struggle for women all over the world. Between 2010-2014, a staggering 25 million women had to resort to unsafe abortion practices. While safe abortion procedures are incredibly low-risk with hardly any adverse effects, unsafe practices tragically lead to 23,000 deaths every year.

But there's hope! Telemedicine is connecting women with compassionate care and support remotely, offering a lifeline for safe abortion access. This innovative approach uses technology like phone calls and video chats to provide medical information, consultations, and discreetly deliver abortion pills (mifepristone and misoprostol) for you to take in the privacy of your own home.

So many women have found comfort and empowerment in accessing medical abortion through telemedicine, with outcomes just as good as traditional in-person care. In fact, over 200,000 women in England and Wales have chosen to have an early abortion at home, showing just how accepted and effective these telemedical services are.

Having the option to take abortion pills at home can be such a relief, especially if you're dealing with transportation issues, disabilities, or an abusive relationship. Remote access to abortion services in England plays a crucial role in making sure all women can get the care they need.

During tough times, telemedicine has been a beacon of hope, providing safe and effective care for early medical abortions. Strong evidence shows that telemedicine abortion without any prior testing is safe, effective, and actually improves overall care for women.

The recent Health and Care Act 2022 was a major win for abortion rights in English law, putting early medical abortion by telemedicine on sturdy legal ground in England and Wales. This change in the law recognises that many women prefer the comfort, privacy and empowerment of home-based care when it comes to their healthcare decisions.

Getting those pills delivered discreetly by mail gave women a sense of autonomy and control over their own healthcare choices, reducing the stigma and fear of being judged. This personalised approach ensures you feel truly supported, empowered and in control of your body and your choices.
